Tyacks Hotel, 27 Commercial Street, Camborne, Cornwall, TR14 8LD
Tyacks has been welcoming guests since 1780, constructed by Philip Vincent the main section of the hotel was originally called the King's Head, indicating it was the most important inn or hotel. Around 1900, William Tyack purchased the inn and his family held the license for nearly 100 years, changing the name to Tyacks Hotel.
The Lounge Bar - once known as Abraham’s Hotel - was purchased by William Tyack over one hundred years ago and was built using granite quoins taken from the engine houses at Dolcoath mine. Many Cornish miners left for America during the gold rush and from there travelled the world. It is said that wherever you are in the world, if there's a big hole there will be a Cornish miner at the bottom of it!
After Richard Trevithick's famous steam engine had made its inaugural run in 1801 it was left outside in our yard whilst it's inventors celebrated inside...it subsequently ran out of water and blew up! Local myths tell of the mysterious spirit of ‘the lady of the night’ who still lingers in the hotel. Watch out for her harmlessly wandering through the upstairs rooms, billowing curtains even though the windows are shut.
The Unicorn Inn - now our Coach Bar - was the scene of an ugly riot in April 1841 when tin miners refused to leave the bar. It took both the police and the army to eventually remove them!
